Google DeepMind engineers served as technical leads on 'Love, Rendered,' a documentary directed by Liz Garbus and produced with Darren Aronofsky's Primordial Soup. The project used generative AI to reconstruct an unrecorded memory for Burt and Ethelle Shatz, married over 70 years. The technical approach combined photo restoration of archival black-and-white images with performance capture models that mapped the couple's present-day mannerisms onto animated younger likenesses. Google claims the resulting recreation felt authentic to the subjects. The project draws on reminiscence therapy concepts. Google also notes its Gemini app can restore and colorize personal family photographs.
