AWS announced metadata pre-filtering for Amazon S3 Vectors on September 30, 2026. The feature, available in ENHANCED index mode, resolves metadata filters before running similarity searches, which AWS says can return up to 5x more matching vectors on highly selective filters compared to the previous CLASSIC mode. Each vector supports up to 2 KB of filterable metadata and up to 100 filter constraints per query. A new prefix operator, $startsWith, supports path and hierarchical key filtering. Existing indexes remain in CLASSIC mode until updated via the UpdateIndexMode API. No re-ingestion is required. AWS says the feature carries no additional cost beyond standard S3 Vectors pricing.
